Tom started his career as an art critic for the Evening Independent when he graduated high school. He didn't know the first thing about critiquing art, so he just asked people at the shows what they thought about the art. His column was made up of the interviews. He had a great respect for writing as a craft, and welcomed newbies as well as professionals to read at the Beaux. He expanded on his uncle's weekend teas, switched from tea to coffee and claimed to have the oldest coffee house in Florida.
